Waterloo Suicide Death – Police Investigate University of Waterloo Incident
A death in Waterloo, Ontario, has been the subject of a police investigation after a 62-year-old man died on May 24, 2026. The incident prompted an investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) because Waterloo Regional Police Service officers were involved in an effort to prevent the man from harming himself.
According to the SIU, police received information from a mental health crisis line that the man was threatening to hurt himself and had access to a firearm. Officers located his apartment near University Avenue East and Weber Street North, secured the area and began communicating with him in an effort to resolve the situation safely.
During the police response, officers continued negotiations with the man. Tragically, a gunshot was heard at approximately 9:52 p.m. Officers entered the apartment and found him deceased. The SIU later confirmed that his death resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The SIU conducted an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and the actions of the officers involved. On September 11, 2026, the agency announced that its investigation had concluded, finding no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer had committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident.
The man’s identity was not publicly disclosed in the SIU announcement. His death is a reminder of the profound impact of mental health crises on individuals, families and communities. Thoughts remain with his loved ones and everyone affected by the tragedy, and may they find compassion and support as they navigate their loss.
